La Romana is located on the Southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, next to Rio Dulce (La Romana River) and adjacent to Catalina Island. In the Greater Antilles between Cuba and Puerto Rico, Hispaniola is the second-largest Caribbean island. La Romana is Republica Dominicana's youngest city. In the first decades of the Twentieth century, Puerto Rico Sugar Company established the biggest private sugar refinery of the country: the Central Romana, creating the seed for future urban development. People arrived from Puerto Rico and the neighboring islands to work and they soon populated the village giving way to a unique society and culture. For decades, it was also an important port for sugar export. Everything changed in La Romana in 1970 when Gulf & Western Industries absorbed Puerto Rico Sugar Company and developed Casa de Campo, as a worldly upscale vacation resort, and Altos de Chavon, as an artists' village on the Chavon River. It receives artists from all over the world. Casa de Campo and Altos de Chavon attract vacationers and artists interested in enjoying the tropics in a cosmopolitan setting. Casa de Campo includes an impressive Archaeological Museum of Taino artifacts, the amphitheater Altos de Chavon, where international artists perform in the open air.
